The Real Deal Hurt Cream is a wonderful adjunct to the work we do as hands on primary healthcare practitioners at City Osteopaths healthcare.

Perfect to Support Healing. Pleasant & Safe to Use for All the Family

For any kind of injury, pain or swelling, to aid recovery from neck and back stiffness; sports injuries, post-surgery during pregnancy for leg, foot and back discomfort; for children's bumps and bruises and other conditions like arthritis, eczema, psoriasis and sunburn.

An added bonus we discovered is that gently massaged on the back on the muscles lying beside the spine between the shoulder blades it will help ease or completely stop a night time cough. Very useful for children or adults so everyone can get a good night sleep.

Real Deal Hurt Crème has a pleasant scent, and when applied, you will experience a general warming of the tissues without the strong burning sensation common to some other products. Therefore, the Crème should be compatible with all skin types and sensitivities. It absorbs totally leaving the skin oil free.

In our practice we sell it slightly below recommended retail (21.90) at $19.90 so its a little more accessible for people and it is an extremely popular product.

"I have had long term back and shoulder pain. This has been totally fixed by my osteopath Sebastian in the last three weeks. A great change to my life and lifestyle.  Recommend the practice (City Osteopaths) to anyone." T.Lynch

"I have been having seeing Sebastian for the last few months, after suffering from neck, shoulder pain and stiffness and lower back stiffness and discomfort. Most of the pain and stiffness I was experiencing has disappeared and my overall posture has improved significantly. Sebastian has also recommended targeted exercises and magnesium and vitamin B all to assist with my overall recovery".
M. Mallet

"I have been seeing Sebastian, and I was a little skeptical initially. However he has helped mobilise my back and pelvis to a point I have never had so much movement in my life. He has been so kind and supportive in every way possible and made me feel comfortable at all times. I have urged so many others to book in and see him".

Athletes and sports people alike can benefit from what Acupuncture has to offer them while they are training; emphasis is directed on receiving treatment before they are injured! Reduce swelling, improve mobility, and strengthen tendons and ligaments. It will not only physically balance you but also mentally.

Reasons Acupuncture can benefit athletes:

·         Accelerated healing: Acupuncture increases blood flow to an injured area, the insertion of a foreign object (this being an Acupuncture needle) initiates an immune response in the body, this causes an increase in blood flow as the bodies resources are stimulated to that area to investigate/rectify the cause: Research at UCLA Medical Center (Responsees of Nitric Oxide- cGMP Release in Acupuncture Point to Electroacupuncture in Hunman Skin In Vivo Using Dermal Microdialysis. In Mircrocirculation, 2009 May, 26:1-10) Showed Acupuncture needles increase the release of Nitric Oxide in the body which causes blood vessels to relax and allow more blood flow through the body.

·         Reduce pain: Acupuncture stimulates the release of the body’s natural pain killers (endorphins and Opioids) and interrupts pain signals. This is from Acupuncture’s ability to stimulate afferent nerve fibres stimulating the release of analgesic (pain relieving) substances and disrupt the pain feedback loop. Study conducted through the University of Michigan Health System in Journal of NeuroImage, Vol 5, No.83, 2009) results showed Acupuncture balances the bodies self-regulatory pain response and helped de-sensitise the body to pain.

·         Speed up recovery time: Acupuncture increases microcirculation in the limbs through as previously mentioned initiating an immune response in the body which causes the body to release Histamine (Vasodilator) causing blood vessels to become more permeable: Poor circulation causes tight muscles which are going to take longer to recover and tire easier. Helping you get back to training sooner!

·         Increased energy: Acupuncture speeds up metabolic processes assisting metabolism, allowing your body to draw more nutrients from your food. Helping utilise the food you eat more efficiently; to increase stamina and endurance, plus increase post workout recovery.

·         Reduced inflammation: Allowing for improved circulation and blood flow prevents chronic inflammation from developing and potentially a chronic injury from forming. One of the mechanisms through which this occurs shown with research conducted by a Neuroscientist Maiken Nedergaard  at the University of Rochester Medical in New York State; demonstrated that Acupuncture stimulates the release of a natural compound called Adenosine which has powerful anti-inflammatory properties.

·         Reduce muscular tension: An injury causes muscles in the surrounding area to tighten and constrict, guarding the injury site. Acupuncture stimulates the nerves involved in contracting and relaxing muscle fibres, thus stimulating muscles to release on a deeper level, reducing residue tension and increasing range of motion.

·         Efficient healing: Acupuncture encourages the body to efficiently go through the 3 stages of healing and limit the possibility of permanent damage and scar tissue formation, working towards healing properly the first time!

Back Pain, Leg Pain, Sciatic Pain help, City Osteopaths Wellington

Back pain is bad enough, but what if your pain also goes down your leg? Is your leg the problem or can it be coming from your back? Where do you go to get effective and lasting relief fast? At City Osteopaths our practitioners are experts in helping back and leg pain. We provide excellent treatment and work with you so you are back to full health quickly.
What is sciatica?
You’ve probably heard people saying they have sciatica – and if you’ve had back pain, you might have even wondered if you’ve got it yourself.  Sciatica is a commonly used (and occasionally    abused) term - but what does it actually mean?

Picture
The sciatic nerve is the largest in diameter in your body and when its in trouble the pain can be excruciating

The word sciatica describes a set of symptoms, including lower back, buttock, hip, leg and foot pain as well as numbness, weakness, "pins and needles" or tingling in these areas.

The symptoms are due to irritation of the sciatic nerve, a large nerve about the same circumference as your thumb that starts in your low back and travels down the leg to the foot, supplying power to muscles and sensation to skin along the way.  So while the term sciatica describes the symptoms, sciatica is not a diagnosis by itself – the diagnosis comes from figuring out what is irritating the nerve in the first place – and there’s quite a few potential causes!  Here are a few of the most common causes:

·   If one of your lumbar discs is bulging or herniated, it can press on and irritate part of the nerve as it exits the spinal cord.

·   As we get older, our spines often start to exhibit age-related changes, occasionally growing bone spurs, or just starting to narrow and compress the spinal cord, thus pinching and irritating nerves as they exit the spine.

·  The sciatic nerve passes very close to a muscle at the back of your pelvis, called the piriformis.  When the muscle shortens or spasms, it can compress the sciatic nerve, causing symptoms down the leg.

PicturePiriformis muscle shown in pink

·     During pregnancy, the weight of the foetus can press onto the sciatic nerve.  While it’s not harmful to the baby, it can be very frustrating for expectant mothers!

·   And for the gentlemen, there’s “wallet sciatica”, caused by sitting down with an over-stuffed wallet in your back pocket, thus compressing the nerve as it passes around the back of the pelvis.  There’s a simple solution for this one!

However, there are a lot of other conditions which can cause very similar symptoms.  As osteopaths, we are trained to be able to determine the most likely cause of your symptoms, whether it is something relatively simple, or a more complex condition that might require further specialist attention.

At your appointment, we’ll make a diagnosis, then discuss treatment options with you.  Treatment will usually involve the application of some gentle and very effective osteopathic techniques to calm the irritation in the area and relieve pressure on the nerve.  We can advise you on what you should and shouldn’t be doing, and offer you some simple stretches and exercises to continue the healing process on your own time.

We are able to send you for an x-ray if we think it will give us information helpful in the management of your symptoms, and we can refer you for further specialist attention if needed.

At City Osteopaths, we are excellent at getting you out of pain quickly. We also regularly collaborate with our on-site acupuncturists and massage therapists to provide a well-rounded healing process.
